On June 23, 2016, the Supreme Court released its ruling on US v. Texas, a 4-4 split decision that results in a continued injunction against DAPA and expanded DACA. (To read AKIN’s official statement on the ruling, click here.)
In response, members and allies of the Comité Popular and AKIN marched in downtown Knoxville to express our disappointment over this outcome.
Angel Ibarra, a friend of the Sanchez family, said it was unfortunate that they are still fighting to be “equal” and he worries about his parents who are getting older.
“They’re getting close to the age where it’s time for them to retire, but they’re not going to retire because they’re undocumented but they’ve been paying taxes since they’ve been here,” he said of his parents, who have been in the U.S. for 22 years.
Ibarra added that the decision also won’t stop them from living their lives.
“I want the Knoxville community to know that this isn’t going to stop us from waking up and going to work tomorrow morning,” he said. “We’re still going to go to work. We’re still going to run our businesses. We’re still moving on up.”
